Selective isolation and enumeration of Staphylococcus aureus (colonies appear black and shiny, surrounded by a clear zone). Baird Parker Agar contains a nutritive mixture of peptone, beef extract and yeast extract as sources of nitrogenous compounds, carbon, sulfur, vitamins and trace minerals. Sodium pyruvate and glycine are incorporated to stimulate the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. Tellurite, a differential agent, imparts a black color to the colonies when it is reduced.

Upon receipt, store plates at 2-8°C away from direct light in an inverted position. Store plates in original outer wrapping until ready to use. Media can be inoculated up to the expiration date and incubated for the appropriate incubation period.
