Hektoen Enteric Agar contains peptic digest of animal tissue and yeast extract, which are excellent sources of amino nitrogen compounds, vitamins, and other essential nutrients.

Bile salts inhibit gram-positive organisms. Lactose, sucrose, and salicin are fermentable carbohydrates present for differentiation of enteric pathogens by color of both colonies and medium adjacent to the colonies. Ferric ammonium citrate and sodium thiosulfate are present in the formulation to detect hydrogen sulfide production, indicated by the production of black-centered colonies. Sodium chloride maintains the osmotic balance of the medium. The indicator system of bromthymol blue and acid fuchsin, lower in toxicity than indicators included in other enteric media, provides improved recovery of enteric pathogens. Agar is the solidifying agent.

Hektoen Enteric Agar is recommended when testing dietary supplements, food, milk, water, and environmental samples for the presence of Salmonella and/or Shigella species.
